Yes it looks fake but it was not too expensive for a pup rug. The pattern is just printed on and it's not fake fur it's more like brushed flannel. It's ok if your expectations aren't too high.

I ordered this rug to lay over a bench at the end of my bed. My puppy likes to sleep on the bench which is covered with white satin fabric and not easily cleanable. This faux cowhide rug is very washable so it is perfect. While up close the rug is obviously not a real cowhide, from across the room it could pass for it. The rug washes well, i have washed it and hung it dry 3 times so far. The rug is very soft and true to life color wise and in pattern.
This cowhide rug looks and feels almost real. I have another cowhide rug that definitely feels fake, but not this one. It looks great on the floor and the cats definitely enjoy lounging on it. I realize cowhide rugs aren't for everyone, but if you like the western look or just something from nature, this rug will make you smile.
This is very lifelike and incredibly soft & smooth. The colors are perfect, it is well made and I don't see any signs of fraying or discoloration. It does slide a little on the carpet in our living room, but it didn't when tested on a hardwood floor.I want more, I want it bigger, the wife agrees, so we are plotting the next purchase already.
